When you photograph your idols and they become friends..

In July of 2015 I took a workshop with Kirsten Lewis and Jenna Shouldice in Colorado. Little did I know I would become the band groupie of the power duo. Anything they come up with it’s worth following  (check DFA). And beyond their crazy talent as artists, they are super amazing human beings (and their kids and spouses as well).

They have both given me inspiration and encouragement in this crazy photographer’s life path ( I am actually taking one of Kirsten year-long class now). And I am who I am as a photographer in great part because of them (damn, I am not gonna cry!) anyways, you get the point.

In 2019 when I thought that a workshop with them would be the ultimate combo they decided to add a third photographer. And that third photographer was no other than… (suspense…. drum roll….) Niki freaking Boon. And where? in Miami!!! And this time they asked me to shoot the behind the scene of the workshop for them. And that’s when I almost died (ok, I didn’t almost die, but my heart might have made a happy dance)

Before starting the class Kirsten had a surprise for us. She invited on a sunset trip in a Catamaran. I must confess that shooting for these 3 ladies and their families was as intimidating as it can be. But they quickly became friends more than mentors. And I will always remember that sailing trip with a huge smile on my face.

I find that having a mentor is so important in this industry. Photography can be a roller coaster of emotions and having people that are in the same boat ( hehe quick joke here, since the shoot was in a cat) it’s very important.  In the Narrative year-long program, I am doing with Kirsten, I have never seen anyone so dedicated to their students. She genuinely cares and it’s there for you.
